Square video (1:1 aspect ratio) is the feed format of choice for Instagram posts, Facebook, and LinkedIn. It takes up more screen space than horizontal video in scrolling feeds, which means more attention and higher engagement. But most cameras shoot in 16:9 or 4:3, not 1:1 — so you need to resize.

MiOffice converts your video to 1080x1080 square (1:1) format directly in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly. Crop to focus on the center, or pad to preserve the full frame. No file upload, no watermarks, no account.

Your video stays on your device — nothing is sent to any server.

How to Resize Video to Square

  1. 1

    Open the Square Video Resizer

Go to the square video resizer. FFmpeg WebAssembly loads in your browser automatically — no install or plugin needed.

  2. 2

    Upload Your Video

Drag and drop your video file (MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI). The file loads into browser memory — no server upload. You will see a preview showing the original dimensions and aspect ratio.

  3. 3

    Choose Resize Mode

Crop takes the center square from your video, cutting the excess width (horizontal) or height (vertical). Pad/Fit scales the video to fit inside a 1:1 frame with bars on the shorter dimension. Stretch fills the square by distorting the image.

  4. 4

    Download Your Square Video

FFmpeg encodes the resized video as H.264 MP4 at 1080x1080. Download the result — no watermarks. Ready to post to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or any platform.

When to Use Square Video

Square video is not the right choice for every platform. Here is where 1:1 works best and where you should use vertical (9:16) or horizontal (16:9) instead:

Platform / PlacementBest Aspect RatioResolution
Instagram Feed1:1 (square) or 4:5 (portrait)1080x1080 or 1080x1350
Facebook Feed1:1 (square)1080x1080
LinkedIn Feed1:1 (square)1080x1080
Twitter / X1:1 (square) or 16:91080x1080 or 1920x1080
Instagram Reels9:16 (vertical)1080x1920
TikTok9:16 (vertical)1080x1920
YouTube16:9 (horizontal)1920x1080

Why Square Outperforms Horizontal in Feeds

In scrolling feeds (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn), a square video takes up 78% more screen space than a 16:9 horizontal video. More screen space means the viewer's thumb is more likely to pause. Data from social media studies consistently shows that square video gets higher engagement rates in feed placements than horizontal video.

The exception is YouTube, where horizontal 16:9 is the native format. For YouTube regular uploads, always use 16:9. For YouTube Shorts, use 9:16 vertical. Square video is specifically a feed format for social platforms.

Crop vs Pad: Choosing the Right Mode

When to Crop

Use crop when the important content is centered: talking-head videos, product shots, interviews, cooking demos. Cropping a 16:9 video to 1:1 removes 22% from each side but keeps the center at full resolution. The subject stays sharp and fills the frame.

When to Pad/Fit

Use pad/fit when all content matters: screen recordings, tutorials with side panels, landscape photography, group shots. The full video appears within the square frame. The bars above and below can be blurred content or solid color. The trade-off is the video appears smaller within the square.

Platform-Specific Tips

Instagram Feed — Square video displays at 1080x1080 in the feed. Instagram also supports 4:5 portrait (1080x1350) which takes up even more vertical space. Consider 4:5 for maximum feed presence, 1:1 for a cleaner grid aesthetic. Both are supported by the resizer.

Facebook Feed — Square video auto-plays as users scroll. Facebook compresses video aggressively, so upload at 1080x1080 with a bitrate of at least 4 Mbps. Shorter videos (under 60 seconds) tend to perform better because Facebook counts 3-second views, and shorter videos have higher completion rates.

LinkedIn Feed — Square video is ideal for LinkedIn because the feed is narrow on desktop. A 1:1 video fills the column width and stands out between text posts. LinkedIn supports videos up to 10 minutes, but engagement drops sharply after 90 seconds for most content types.

Twitter / X — Square and 16:9 horizontal both display well on Twitter. Square takes up more timeline space on mobile. Twitter compresses video significantly, so start with the highest quality source you have.

Need Vertical Instead?

If your target platform is TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts, you need 9:16 vertical video, not square. Use these platform-specific resizers:

Make Your Video Square

Upload your video, resize to 1080x1080, and download. No watermarks, no upload, no account. All processing happens in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best resolution for square video?
1080x1080 pixels is the standard. Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn all support 1080x1080 square video. Some platforms accept up to 2048x2048, but 1080x1080 provides the best balance of quality and file size across all platforms.
When should I use square video instead of vertical?
Use square (1:1) for Instagram feed posts, Facebook feed posts, LinkedIn feed posts, and Twitter/X posts. Use vertical (9:16) for Stories, Reels, TikTok, and Shorts. Square video takes up more screen space in feed-based layouts than horizontal video, making it a good compromise between vertical and horizontal.
Does cropping a horizontal video to square lose too much content?
When cropping 16:9 horizontal to 1:1 square, you lose about 44% of the width (the left and right sides). If your subject is centered, this usually works fine. For content where the full width matters, use pad/fit mode which preserves everything within the square frame.
Can I add text or branding to the padded areas?
The MiOffice resizer focuses on the resize operation itself — crop, pad, or fit. For adding text overlays, captions, or branding to padded areas, you would use a video editor after resizing. The exported square video is a standard MP4 that works in any editor.
